Champions for Mindfulness

Simone Biles is truly a champion for mental health! Biles deserves to be applauded for standing in her truth, bravery, and courage to put her mental wellness first.

Simone Biles' decision to withdraw from the team competition and the individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Olympics came as a surprise to many. Biles, largely viewed as the greatest gymnast of all time, says mental health concerns were at the forefront of her mind."

"Tennis star Naomi Osaka has also made public statements about her struggles with depression. She pulled out of the French Open and Wimbledon this year to focus on her mental wellbeing.” - NPR

These two athletes were brave enough to step down from the most significant sports stage to ensure their health does not degrade, becoming an inspiration for all the people suffering from mental, physical, emotional, or spiritual health concerns.

Biles and Osaka's decision to focus on their mental wellness has sparked an immense reaction worldwide and has called for increased support for Mindfulness and self-care.

Ignoring Mental Health would be a mistake since it is an essential aspect of every person’s life. The need for Mindfulness coaching, self-help classes, and self-care techniques at home, work, and school has grown.

The first step to dealing with mental health issues is to understand what is affecting you mentally. Fatigue, emotional turmoil, mood changes, and stress are all symptoms of different forms of mental illnesses or mental health challenges.

Depression and anxiety are the most common types of mental health issues and affect millions of people worldwide. These two alone go undiagnosed in most cases, and for the most part, many people decide to ignore them. This ignorance is the most dangerous part of mental health issues.

According to the World Health Organization, mental health is “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Practicing Mindfulness is an effective way to tackle mental health issues. It involves purposefully focusing your mind on being fully present and being responsive versus reactive. Harvard Business Review states, "Neuroscientists have also shown that practicing mindfulness affects brain areas related to perception, body awareness, pain tolerance, emotion regulation, introspection, complex thinking, and sense of self."

Mindfulness is a critical part of one's self-care routine and is often the first step to getting better. By allowing your mind to focus on the regions of your being that need attention, you give yourself a leg up in dealing with specific issues, which can make the self-care aspect of solving mental problems a smoother ride.
